Nursing- LPN Career Mobility Program

Oak Ridge Branch Campus

What is the LPN Career Mobility Program?

Roane State Community College is offering the LPN Career Mobility program during the evenings and on weekends at the RSCC Oak Ridge Branch Campus, beginning Fall 2010.  The typical schedule for the nursing courses will involve 2 evenings per week and Saturday labs/clinicals. Upon successful completion of the program, a student will be awarded the Associate of Applied Science Degree in Nursing.  The student is then eligible to take the NCLEX examination to become a registered nurse.

What do I need to do to be eligible for the program?

Students need to have completed at least 12 of the 27 credit hours from the required general education courses. The BIOL 2010 and MATH 1130 (or a higher content level math) must be part of the 12 credit hours completed with a grade of C or better prior to beginning nursing classes. Science course completed more than 10 years ago will not be counted.  Students need to complete a general application to Roane State Community College and the Nursing application, indicating that they are applying for the LPN Career Mobility Program.  Acceptance into the program is based on achieving the required score on the challenge examination, grades, number of credits completed from the required general education requirements, availability of space, and successful attainment of the LPN license.  Preference will be given to those who have completed the MATH and BIOL requirements prior to the summer semester.

How long is this program?

This program is similar to the LPN Career Mobility Program that has been offered in the past.  The main difference is that nursing courses for this option are offered over four semesters rather than three, making it easier for students to handle demands of school and work.  All of the general education courses may be taken prior to starting nursing classes.  However, it is not required to complete all of them prior to beginning the nursing courses.

How many students will be accepted into the program?

We plan to accept up to 20 students into this option the first year.

When is the application deadline?

Students must submit their college application and their nursing application by April 1 in order to be considered.

When should I take the LPN challenge test?

You may take the proficiency examination prior to LPN licensure, but must have an active LPN license prior to final acceptance into the program.  On the day of the examination, you will be required to present an active Tennessee Practical Nurse license or a signed letter from your LPN program director stating you are eligible to sit for the LPN licensure exam.  Your ID will be verified before being admitted to the examination.  You should arrive 15 minutes before test to sign in.

How do I sign up for the LPN challenge test?

There are links to nursing testing information and registration form on both the nursing program and testing center webpages.

Can students attend the program part-time or on weekends or evenings?  Are any distance learning courses offered?

The general education courses are available in a wide variety of formats, including regular, hybrid, and web classes.  General education classes may be taken during the day, evening, or weekends.  Nursing courses for this option will be scheduled in the evenings and on Saturdays.  This is designed as a part-time program, allowing the student to continue employment.

Where and when will nursing courses be taught?

The theory and skills lab portion will be taught at the Oak Ridge Branch Campus.  Clinicals will be scheduled at area health care agencies.
